Code Week Hackathon (EN/GR)

Last week, I had the pleasure of participating as a mentor in the 1st hackathon, organized for Europe, by Code Week. This competition took place online, on May 7-8, and lasted 24 hours. The students aged 15-19, who participated had to develop a system that would solve a problem of our daily life and in particular, they had to create a solution that would reduce the problem of “tails” that is encountered for years and has increased rapidly due to Covid-19.

The truth is that this is my first time participating as a mentor in something like this and for this reason, I had low expectations since the contestants were students. But I was pleasantly surprised when I saw with what appetite and passion they worked, the way they collaborated, the fact that the distance did not prevent them at all from creating, and finally, what awesome ideas they had! They made me think if at their age I would be working on such a demanding project as they did. Honestly, I wish I had such opportunities when I was at school.

In closing, I believe that opportunities like this one should not be missed, and I hope that this competition will be established and that even more children will participate. I am looking forward to October when the final between the 10 teams that qualified will take place, and then I hope to have the opportunity to meet them all – contestants, mentors, and organizing committee – up close.

Την εβδομάδα που μας πέρασε, είχα τη χαρά να συμμετέχω ως μέντορας, στο 1ο hackathon, που διοργανώθηκε για την Ευρώπη, από το Code Week. Ο διαγωνισμός αυτός έλαβε χώρα διαδικτυακά, στις 7-8 Μαΐου και διήρκησε 24 ώρες. Οι μαθητές ηλικίας 15-19 ετών, που συμμετείχαν έπρεπε να αναπτύξουν ένα σύστημα, το οποίο να λύνει ένα πρόβλημα της καθημερινότητάς μας και ειδικότερα, έπρεπε να δημιουργήσουν μία λύση, με την οποία θα μειωθεί το πρόβλημα των “ουρών” που συναντάται χρόνια και έχει αυξηθεί ραγδαία λόγω του Covid-19.

Η αλήθεια είναι πως συμμετείχα πρώτη φορά ως μέντορας σε κάτι τέτοιο και γι αυτόν τον λόγο είχα χαμηλές προσδοκίες, μιας και οι διαγωνιζόμενοι ήταν μαθητές. Εξεπλάγην ευχάριστα όμως, όταν είδα με τι όρεξη και πάθος δούλευαν, τον τρόπο που συνεργάζονταν, το γεγονός πως δεν τους εμπόδισε καθόλου η απόσταση στο να δημιουργήσουν και τέλος, τι φοβερές ιδέες είχαν! Με έβαλαν σε σκέψεις να αναρωτηθώ αν στην ηλικία τους θα εργαζόμουν έτσι πάνω σε ένα τέτοιο απαιτητικό πρότζεκτ. Ειλικρινά, μακάρι να είχα και εγώ τέτοιες ευκαιρίες όταν ήμουν στο σχολείο.

Κλείνοντας, πιστεύω πως ευκαιρίες σαν τη συγκεκριμένη δεν πρέπει να χάνονται και ελπίζω ο διαγωνισμός αυτός να καθιερωθεί και να συμμετέχουν ακόμα περισσότερα παιδιά του χρόνου. Ανυπομονώ πολύ για τον Οκτώβρη που θα γίνει ο τελικός ανάμεσα στις 10 ομάδες που προκρίθηκαν και ελπίζω τότε να έχω την ευκαιρία να τους γνωρίσω όλους – διαγωνιζόμενους, μέντορες και οργανωτική επιτροπή – από κοντά.
